Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on words as a young teenager. Ford's love for acting grew in her early years. Ford joined at the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted at the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days but Ford realized this was not the best place for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama, finally winning the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993, but she already made a TV appearance in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy style, which she began adding to her show in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
